Mozilla releases patch for Java Script Vulnerability

July 17th, 2009

A bug discovered earlier this week in Firefox 3.5’s Just-in-time (JIT) JavaScript compiler was disclosed publicly by S.Berry on milw0rm. Just after three days worth of testing later, Mozilla has pushed out Firefox 3.5.1, with a fix for this error as well as corrections for several other bugs.

“ Firefox user zbyte reported a crash that we determined could result in an exploitable memory corruption problem. In certain cases after a return from a native function, such as escape(), the Just-in-Time (JIT) compiler could get into a corrupt state. This could be exploited by an attacker to run arbitrary code such as installing malware.”

The vulnerability was introduced in TraceMonkey, the JavaScript engine used in Firefox 3.5 that actually offers a decent speed boost to the browser. Oddly enough, TraceMonkey was already set to be patched this month by Mozilla, as bugs in the newest engine were listed in a July 1 meeting as the sole topcrash issue for Firefox 3.5. In other words, while vulnerabilities like this are horrible, this one came at a perfect time as developers were already giving TraceMonkey a thorough cleaning.

Features:-

  • Super Speed new
View Web pages way faster, using less of your computer’s memory.
  • Anti-Phishing & Anti-Malware improved
Enjoy the most advanced protection against online bad guys.
  • Session Restore improved
Unexpected shutdown? Go back to exactly where you left off.
  • One-Click Bookmarking
Bookmark, search and organize Web sites quickly and easily.
  • Easy Customization improved
Thousands of add-ons give you the freedom to make your browser your own.
  • Tabs improved
Do more at once with tabs you can organize with the drag of a mouse.
  • Instant Web Site ID
Avoid online scams, unsafe transactions and forgeries with simple site identity.

I strongly recommend that all firefox 3.5 users upgrade to this latest release. If you already have Firefox 3.5, you will receive an automated update notification within 24 to 48 hours. This update can also be applied manually by selecting “Check for Updates…” from the Help menu. You can download Firefox 3.5.1 from official Mozilla site.

Firefox v3.5 Memory corruption vulnerability discovered

July 15th, 2009

If you want to upgrade your Firefox to the latest 3.5 then think again.

SBerry released code on Milw0rm, has issued an advisory warning of a memory corruption error in Mozilla’s newest version of Firefox, version 3.5. The vulnerability, if exploited, allows code execution that could lead to system compromise.

The vulnerability is caused due to an error when processing JavaScript code handling e.g. "font" HTML tags and can be exploited to cause a memory corruption.

Here is SBerry Posted code.

Secunia is offering advice to Firefox users that until this newest vulnerability is patched, they should avoid untrusted websites and links. However, Brian Krebs took the smart road in his advice on the issue. Krebs, who is a reporter for the Washington Post, advised his users to disable "javascript.options.jit.content" in about:config. This fix has a drawback however, it will lower the rendering speeds of JavaScript, which is one of the major performance improvements in Firefox 3.5. If you are willing to take the trade, then his fix should work fine.

DNS INFORMATION LEAK

There is another little glitch in firefox that exposes DNS information for users wanting to remain anonymous using proxy settings.

Tw1zl3r reports that, “The DNS Leak issue in FireFox 3.5 is a BIG BUG because even if you use the about:Config force remote DNS look ups using a proxy the requests are still sent to your local DNS. The local DNS query leaks your web searches out for anyone with a brain cell and WireShark to view a users web query’s in plain text. FireFox 3.5 has the toggle network.proxy.socks_remote_dns option in it but when adding the option in about:Config it does nothing and is all show no go. The setting does nothing and allows DNS to Leak.”

However, some users who tested his point wonder if the DNS leak has more to do with an add-on than Firefox itself. However, if it is a Mozilla issue, then it would need to be addressed as soon as possible.

Convert Firefox into Faster Firefox

June 6th, 2009

This tutorial will basically sum up speeding up Firefox. I will also post add-ons that are very helpful for smooth browsing on firefox.

First make sure you download Firefox. Why? Because its much faster, updated frequently, and allows you to do much more then any other browser.

Download Firefox

Speeding Up Firefox

Alright these are some simple and easy changes that will speed up Firefox by about 300%!

Pipelining:- Pipelining is what loads every single page you click. At default, it is set to download 1 thing at a time. That can take a long time, so were going to make it load 30 at a time! This will speed up web browsing quite a bit.

               Steps to follow:-

  • Open up Firefox
  • Type “about:config” in the URL bar
  • In the config, search “pipelining”
  • Look for a file called “network.http.pipelining”
  • Double click network.http.pipelining, which will set it to true
  • Now look for “network.http.pipelining.maxrequests”
  • Double click network.http.pipelining.maxrequests and set the value to 30 NOT HIGHER!
  • Now Restart firefox

note how much faster web pages will load! (especially akshat.07x.net:P)

Firefox Ultimate Optimizer:- When Firefox is running, it uses quite a lot of ram. This can slow down other programs that you may have running and web browsing. This program will cut it down by about 95%!

How much memory do you use?

  • Open Firefox
  • Open control manager (Ctrl+Alt+delete)
  • On the control manger click the “Processes” tab
  • Under Image Name look for “firefox.exe”
  • Look at the Mem Usage

Firefox Ultimate Optimizer Tutorial

  • Download Firefox Ultimate Optimizer
  • Extract it to you desktop
  • While Firefox is running, run the program
  • Check your memory usage again

note how much less memory (RAM) is being used by Firefox!

Faster Fox:- Faster Fox is an add-on that loads page links before you click them. For instance, if you were on YouTube’s front page, it would be loading every link, video, etc. That way when you click that link, there is much less loading time.

Faster Fox Tutorial:-

Do all that and Firefox run, so fast, you can’t imagine .

Add-ons

Add-ons are the second reason I use Firefox. Firefox has so many help add-on’s. This is a list of some of my favorites and must haves.

Adblock Plus

This blocks advertisements from showing up when searching the web.

NoScript

Allow active content to run only from sites you trust, and protect yourself against XSS and Clickjacking attacks.

Enjoy your faster firefox ;)

Personal Menu- Saves Screen Space in Firefox

April 16th, 2009

This Firefox add-on compacts the menu bar behind a single icon, but it comes with so many options and customizations that it’s a thorough and arguably essential one-trick wonder. Personal Menu frees up screen real estate in much the same way that Google Chrome and Internet Explorer have banished their menus to drop-down status, but because you can alter nearly every aspect of its look and behavior, it’s an exceptionally useful add-on.

After installing Personal Menu, "Menus Toolbar" is available in Toolbar Context Menu, and you may hide it to save the space of browser. Then you may open Personal Menu Option panel to gather all useful commands into "Menu Button", and place it wherever you want; or you may add the items you want in Toolbar Context Menu. When Menus Toolbar is hidden, although you may add "Bookmarks" and "History" inside Menu Button, it become inconvenient to access them. Therefore, here are also "Bookmarks Button" and "History Button". You may also set what happens after you middle / right-click on them, like open Bookmarks Sidebar after middle-clicking Bookmarks Button, and Undo Close Tab after right-clicking History Button.

The reason to go with Personal Menu, though, is that it lets you heavily configure the menus that it hides. From Personal Menu’s Options menu, you can configure which menus appear behind the button, and in which order they’re listed. These choices aren’t limited to the standard File, Bookmarks, or Tools–any sub-menu from the main menus can be pulled out and added to the drop-down.

Firefox fans looking to make the most of their screens or make menus more useful will find this to be a must-have add-on.

             Thanks!!  Merci Chao
